Naomi Osaka Rediscovered Her Love for Tennis After Motherhood
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka remains one of the most recognized names in women’s tennis, having held the WTA world No. 1 ranking for 25 weeks starting in January 2019. Although she is currently ranked 24th, Osaka continues to be a significant presence on and off the court.

Osaka, born in Osaka, Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, has always identified strongly with her Japanese heritage. Her family decided early in her career that she would represent Japan internationally, a decision driven by cultural identity rather than financial or federation influences. “Naomi and her sister Mari have always felt Japanese, so that was our only rationale,” her family explained in an interview, emphasizing the importance of heritage in her sporting journey.

Off the court, Osaka has openly shared aspects of her personal life. She is the mother of a two-year-old daughter, Shai, with musician Cordae. Osaka has described motherhood as her greatest dream, stating, “I always wanted to be a mom.” After announcing her pregnancy in 2023, Osaka took a break from tennis, using the time away to rediscover her passion for the sport. “These few months away from the sport have really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to,” she wrote in a heartfelt post.

Osaka’s relationship with Cordae ended in early 2024, but she has publicly acknowledged him as “a great person and an awesome dad.” Despite personal changes, Osaka remains focused on her career and family, expressing excitement for the future and the possibility of her daughter watching her play professionally.
